d.     English 222 – Greek Tragedy in English Translation (also CL122)

Shanahan informed the committee that this was actually a request to approve cross-listing Classics 122 by the English Department as English 222. Shanahan noted, and Epstein confirmed, that English has no 100 level courses in literature; so, the cross listing had to move to 200 level. Crabtree stated this could have been simply sent to the Committee as a notification rather than request for approval. Weiss noted that the cross listing requires English Department approval, which was not attached to the request. Shanahan replied that the request was submitted by Jim Simon, chair of English, with English department approval pending and expected. Shanahan stated that the Committee should approve the request, in any case.

Motion: To approve EN222 (Epstein, seconded by Pagano)

Discussion: no further discussion

EN222 was approved unanimously

3.     CONSIDERATION OF REQUEST FROM DEPT. OF MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE TO APPROVE A FOUR-COURSE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM IN THE MATHEMATICS OF FINANCE

Shanahan wondered what kind of curricular status a certificate program has, since the Journal of Record has no language that includes such a program. Crabtree noted that such a program is neither a new program nor part of any degree program. Weiss offered that such programs are often used by the University College as marketing tools to attract students; Shanahan added that perhaps the Math and Comp Sci Department was using this to attract students for enrollment purposes. Im wondered where the pressure for approving such a program was coming from. Weiss stated that the Math and Comp Sci Department had been unaware of the certificate program, administered by Ben Fine, until recently, and had subsequently decided to request official approval or, alternatively, guidance from the Committee about inclusion of such programs in the curriculum. Shanahan proposed that the Committee recommend an approval process in the College of Arts and Sciences for certificate programs that requires department, ASCC, and CAS Dean approval. Crabtree suggested that the Committee also send a copy of such a recommendation to the Academic Council, and encourage the Council to work with Educational Programs Committee to formulate Journal of Record language for certificate programs. Shanahan indicated that he would send such an encouragement, pending a motion, and its approval, for a certificate program approval process.

Motion: That all certificate programs in the College of Arts and Sciences must be approved by their administering departments/programs, the Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee, and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. (Li, seconded by Pagano)

Discussion: no further discussion

Motion for certificate program approval process was approved unanimously.
