Fairfield University

Alpha Mu Gamma is the national collegiate foreign language honor society of the United States, founded in 1931.  More than 350 charters have been granted to chapters in the United States and Puerto Rico.  Chapters are found both in state and private universities and in public and private colleges.

Alpha Mu Gamma has as its primary purpose the honoring of students for outstanding achievement during their foreign-language study in college. Upon initiation a member receives a parchment certificate of membership, and may wear the scroll-shaped pin and gold cord at the commencement exercises.

Students earned two grades of A or A- in the study of a language at the college level, and who have also maintained a GPA of 3.0 or higher, are eligible to apply for admission. Only sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible. Students may apply for membership in more than one language.

Alpha Mu Gamma Conventions
at Fairfield University

For the past fifty years, Alpha Mu Gamma, has hosted a national convention in various locations throughout the United States. The convention is a conference, which brings participants together, both faculty and students alike, to share methodologies, techniques, technological expertise and also to describe experiences and other ideas to enhance the foreign language class. In 2001 the Fairfield University Alpha Mu Gamma chapter hosted the XXX National Biennial Convention, which attracted more than 100 professors and students from universities across the USA. The Eta Pi Chapter at Fairfield University was honored to have the opportunity to hold a second convention in 2009.

The XXXII Alpha Mu Gamma Convention (“Language and Culture across the Curriculum…with a little help from our friends”) was held from October 15 – 17, 2009 and was interdisciplinary in nature, in that in addition to foreign language professionals and student presentations, the conference welcomed papers and presentations that discussed foreign languages and cultures from a variety of perspectives (economics, music, literature, psychology, history, study abroad, etc.).

                                                                      * * * * *
