Future Climate Change:

Greenhouse gases are expected to increase within the atmosphere and will continue to increase within the next century. The increase of greenhouse gas emissions and its effects will change only if gas emission will decrease substantially from present level.

Increased levels of greenhouse gases will very likely raise the Earth’s average temperature along with changing precipitation and storm patterns. High greenhouse gas levels will also raise sea levels. Future climate change will depend on greenhouse gases, temperature, and natural influences.

The speed of the increase of greenhouse gases depends on if the gases and aerosol concentrations increase. The way the environment responds to the increase is another factor. The change is based upon natural activities.

Climate change is a long-term change that will affect the average patterns of weather in specific regions over a period of time. Climate change reflects abnormal variations to the climate in the Earth’s atmosphere. It will affect other parts of the Earth such as the ice caps over a period of time.

In environmental policy, climate change refers to the changes in modern climates. Climate change can be blamed on many factors, but it is also natural for the Earth to slowly change its patterns.

Glaciers are the most sensitive when it comes to climate change because they get larger when the climate cools and smaller when the climate warms. Since the 1970s, scientists have been surveying how large or how small glaciers are getting. Aerial photographs and maps have shown that there are over 100,000 glaciers covering an area of 240,000 kilometers squared. Scientists have observed that glaciers are shrinking significantly since the mid 20th century.

Sea levels will be affected by the melt down of glaciers. The measurement of global warming is seen in global average sea levels. It is possible that many coastal cities will indeed be under water in future centuries.

Vegetation is also something that is being affected by global warming. Change in vegetation is deeply affected by a change in climate. Even a mild change in climate can make more precipitation needed for crops to grow. Another extreme is that droughts will dry up crops. It is very important that the earth prepares itself for the affects of global warming.

The effects of global warming can be seen in Al Gore's film, "An Inconvenient Truth". This film represents how people are unknowingly are witnessing events caused by global warming such as Hurrican Katrina, changes in storm patterns, glacial melting and changes in vegetation. Gore's film is significant because it truly portrays an inconvenient truth that we must all accept and try to improve. Hopefully this film will inspire audiences to care for nature and help our environment.
