SWIFT RESPONSE PAPER

The assignment for Thursday, December 9 is to read Jonathan Swift's "A Description of a City Shower" (pp. 2300-2301) and "The Lady's Dressing Room" (2585-2588).

Also, please bring to class your last response paper (about one page long). I welcome any reactions you have to Swift's poems, but I am particularly interested in your response to one of these two questions:

  1. Jonathan Swift was an Anglican priest. Is it surprising that he should have written poems like these (which, by the way, are perfectly representative of his poetry)?
  2. What is the object of Swift’s satire in "The Lady's Dressing Room"? Who is being mocked, Celia or Strephon? For what?
