1. Read one of the following texts:

 

            a. Plautus,  Amphitryon                                                                    e. Julius Caesar, commentaries on the civil war, books 1-2

            b. Plautus, Aulularia (The Pot of Gold) (a different translation)    f. Tacitus, Germania (a different translation)

            c. Terence, Heauton Timoroumenos                                                  g. Vergil, Georgics, books 1-2 (a different translation)

            d. Sallust,  The Conspiracy of Catiline                                             h. Cicero, Laelius (On Friendship)

 

 

2.  Imagine that you are the book reviewer for a major newpaper like the New York Times or the Washington Post.  A new edition of the text that you have read has just been published.  Write a review of this text for the readers of your newspaper.

 

Normally reviews of books, etc. that appear in newspapers contain at least three elements:

            a. a résumé of the contents of the work being reviewed

            b. a summary of its distinctive features – how is this text different from other texts on the same subject?

            c. an appreciation of the work in question – what is its value for a comtemporary reader?  why is it worth reading?

 

Your review should be a maximum of five pages, typewritten double spaced (around 1,500 words maximum).   Send your review in the form of a Word document attached to an e-mail addressed to rosivach@mail.fairfield.edu no later than 1 :00 pm on October 22, 2008.  Write your name and e-mail address at the top of the document.  At the end of the document append the following:  I affirm that I have read completely the text which is the subject of this review.
