STUDY QUESTIONS FOR SEVEN AGAINST THEBES, IPHIGENIA AT AULIS AND AJAX:

 

1. What is war like?  What image of war emerges from these three plays?  Is it the same in all three plays?  If it is different, how is it different?

 

2. What is each of these plays about?  What issue or issues does each raise?  What will we talk about afterwards?

 

3. Think of the staging of the plays.  What did the Athenian audience see as it watched these plays being performed?  What did it imagine?

 

4. What are the principal character or characters in each of these plays like?  How do the playwrights convey this information to their audiences?  Are their techniques similar or different?

 

5. Compare and contrast Agamemnon in Iphigenia in Aulis and in Ajax.  How are they the same?  How are they different?

 

6. Judging from these three plays, how would you contrast the literary style of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides?
