LA211B Final
Paper:
We have spent this semester reading Vergil’s account of early
Latium. Early Latium is important
because its inhabitants, the Latins, having absorbed Aeneas’ Trojan refugees, would
become the ancestors of the Roman race (at least according to Vergil). With this in mind write an essay, four to
five typewritten pages in length, answering both of the following questions:
1. To judge from the parts of books 7 and 8 of the Aeneid
read this semester, what, according to Vergil, were early Latium and the early
Latins like?
2. To judge from the parts of books 7 and 8 of the Aeneid
read this semester, what could we expect later Romans, the descendants of these
early Latins and Trojan refugees, to be like?
In your paper cite one or more passages
from books 7 and 8 to illustrate each point you make. Refer to your
illustrations using brief summaries (do not quote Vergil at
length). Choose illustrations that you feel best illustrate the point
you are making.
There is a lot that can be said in
answer to these two questions. Try to cover as much ground as your
can within the four-five page limit, but do not under any circumstances go over
five pages. If you have to leave anything out, be sure nothing you
leave out is more important than anything you leave in.
Please include the following statement
attached to your essay:
Any ideas or language that I have gotten
from another source (other than Vergil or class) have been indicated with appropriate
bibliographic citations. Any ideas or
language not so indicated are my own.
Essays without this statement will not
be accepted.
