The Events of 2003-2004

November 12-16, 2003 - The Fairfield University Chapter of Sigma Xi was selected as a Sigma Xi Chapter of Excellence for the year ending June 2003! We were presented with a Certificate of Excellence for outstanding activities at the annual meeting in Los Angeles. This framed certificate is proudly displayed in the glass case outside of Bannow 236.


Julie Lively, Ph.D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, spoke on, "Inhibition of angiogenesis and tumor progression by integrins and collagen fragments" as part of our lecture seminar series. The lecture was held in the School of Nursing Auditorium, Room 203 on Wednesday, December 10, 2003.


Monday, February 23, 2004 - Distinguished lecturer, Judith Herzfeld, Ph.D., Brandeis University, presented her talk on "Sensors and pumps: Molecular mechanisms of retinal-based signal and energy transducers." The event was well attended in the School of Nursing Auditorium, Room 203. Dr. Herzfeld spent time after her talk in discussions with students. On Tuesday, Dr. Herzfeld met individually with Fairfield University faculty Glenn Sauer, Shelley Phelan, and Ed O'Connell.


Tuesday, April 13, 2004 - Linda Henkel, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Psychology at Fairfield University presented a faculty research talk on "The Nature of Memory."


Our Fourth Annual Sigma Xi Poster Session was held in the MacDonnell Atrium on Thursday, April 22, 2004 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The event featured 21 individual research projects involving 32 students. Click here to view photos of the event.


Once again, a very busy year culminated with our Year-End Reception on Tuesday, May 18, 2004. The event was held in the Alumni House. After a lovely brunch of fruit, pastry, bagels and a variety of spreads, 14 new associate members and one faculty full member were inducted into our chapter.
