Friday, September 19, 2008 - Lecture Seminar: In conjunction with University College Open VISIONS Forum at Fairfield University our chapter hosted Steven Pinker, Professor at Harvard College and Johnstone Family Professor in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University.

In his most recent book, The Stuff of Thought: Language as a Window into Human Nature, this "New York Times" bestselling author marries two of the subjects he knows best: language and human nature. The result is a fascinating look at how words explain human nature.


Friday, September 26, 2008 - Lecture Seminar: Robert Crabtree, Ph.D., Yale University. "Climate change: History, scientific basis, and impact on chemical Science." View Abstract


Monday, November 24, 2008 - Lecture Seminar: Al Zullo, Ph.D., of the the Fairfield University class of 2000. As an undergrad student, Al worked with Dr. Virginia Hodgkinson on Leishmania. He received his Ph.D in 2005 and is currently doing a post-doc at Harvard working on a combination of immunology and cancer cell biology. Al will be talked about a new protein that his lab discovered that is tied to proliferation, development, and is altered in human cancer. View Abstract

Wednesday, April 15, 2009 - Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer: Robert M. Hazen, Senior Scientist, Carnegie Institution Geophysical Lab - Talk Title: "Genesis: The scientific quest for life's origin" View Abstract


Thursday, April 23, 2009 - The 9th Annual Sigma Xi Poster Session was held in the McDonnell Atrium from 3-5 p.m. Once again, this successful event featured 35 posters involving 49 students in scientific research. Scrapbook of the event is coming soon.


Wednesday, May 13, 2009 - The Alumni House was the settinig for this years Sigma Xi Reception and Induction Ceremony. At this annual champaign brunch, 14 new student members and three faculty members joined our chapter. All new members received an official certificate of membership. Additionally, the students each received a graduation cord. Scrapbook of this event is coming soon.
