The General Faculty approved the learning outcomes for the Interdisciplinary (ID) element of the Magis Core:
“An Interdisciplinary Experience will satisfy the following learning outcomes:
- I. Synthesize or draw conclusions by connecting examples, data, facts, or theories from more than one perspective or field of study.
- II. Meaningfully synthesize connections among experiences outside of the formal classroom (e.g., life experiences, service learning, study abroad, internship) to deepen understanding of fields of study and to critically examine their own points of view.
- III. Adapt and apply skills, theories, or methodologies across disciplines to explore complex questions and address problems.”
An ID course can be an individually taught course, a team-taught course (with at least one instructor in the College of Arts and Sciences), OR a cluster course (a set of two courses offered during the same term, with at least one in the College of Arts and Sciences). All ID courses must fall within the Orientation or Exploration area of the core.
Applications to have courses designated as an ID course are accepted on a rolling basis. The application form and submission link can be found on the Magis Core website - here! The short application asks faculty to demonstrate how the course meets the approved learning outcomes. The course should be interdisciplinary across two different disciplines – as opposed to a course spanning two different fields within a discipline, no matter how distinct (e.g., a course that spanned Comparative Politics and American Politics would not be approved). A Committee appointed by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences will review applications and forward its decision to the UCC.
Courses that have already been approved as Interdisciplinary courses for the Magis Core, can apply for Course Enhancement Funds. $50 is available to compensate a speaker from a discipline distinct from that of the main instructor. The speaker can be a Fairfield faculty member or an expert from outside the University. Up to $250 is available to support an outside of the classroom activity that supports the ID nature of the course. There is no guarantee of funds without prior approval. The application form which can be found here.
Please contact David Downie, Coordinator of the ID component of the Magis Core, at ddownie@fairfield.edu [x-3504; Politics Department - 304 DMH] if you have questions!
