The initial written approach to a foundation can take two forms. The first is the letter of inquiry which is generally two pages long, and the second is the full proposal. Some private foundations provide an outline for these documents. The University uses a tested outline, which was originally developed by the Foundation Center, in instances where an outline is not provided. Additionally, Deborah S. Koch, former director of foundation relations for the University of Massachusetts Amherst, developed some excellent materials related to proposal development. The Office of Foundation Relations at Fairfield uses these documents with Deborah’s approval.
