PREREQUISITE: Sophomore Standing and One Statistics Course
REQUIRED TEXT: Operations & Supply Management (15th Edition), by Jacobs and Chase: McGraw-Hill/Irwin, 2017

Note: Some of the cases in the textbook will become part of the class assignments. Additional sources will be used and distributed in class.


  1. COURSE DESCRIPTION
  2.  

    This course provides the primary exposure to service and manufacturing operations within the business core curriculum. Topics include process modeling, quality management and control, decision analysis, capacity planning, supply chain management, and project planning and control. Special attention is given to showing how concepts and models presented in lectures and readings apply to real-word business situations. Examples of international operations are studied, and ethical issues are explored within the context of decisions such as where to locate facilities.

  2. The final grade will be calculated as follows:

    Class Participation ............................ 10%
    Homework ....................................... 30%
    Quizzes ........................................ 30%
    Final Exam ..................................... 30%                                   
    TOTAL                             100%

    Quizzes:

     

    Quizzes are scheduled throughout the semester. Each quiz will relate primarily to the material covered in the previous homework, lectures, and cases. Calculators are permitted during the quizzes. Make-up quizzes will be given only in case of valid, documented excuses provided within one week of the missed quiz.

     

    Homework:

     

    Homework assignments will be due on the dates indicated on the attached course schedule. They are to be handed in for partial fulfillments of the course requirements. Solutions to homework will be posted online after the due date. Students are required to use EXCEL for some of the homework problems in order to enhance their EXCEL skills. 

     

    Class Participation:

     

    Cases are part of the assignments of the course, just like homework. They will be presented and discussed in class on the following week they are assigned. Students are encouraged to read each case and participate in class discussions.

     

    In addition to cases, many course topics will lend themselves to class participation. Students are encouraged to come to each class prepared to participate.

     

    Participation during homework review will also be factored into students' class participation grades.

     

    Final Exam:

     

    The final exam will be comprehensive, containing problems from all parts of the course. The format of the final exam will be discussed later.

    In all academic work, students are expected to submit materials that are their own. Examples of dishonest are listed in this link.

    In the event of such dishonesty, professors are to award a grade of zero for the project, paper or examination in question, and may record an F for the course itself. When appropriate, expulsion may be recommended. A notation of the event is made in the student’s file in the academic dean’s office. The student will receive a copy.
